If elected, Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party's (LP) presidential candidate, has pledged that his administration will uphold the law.

Obi delivered the guarantee on Thursday in Owerri during a town hall gathering hosted by the party's Imo chapter.

He congratulated the meeting's organizers for their diligent efforts to mobilize Nigerians to support the party's programs.

Obi also underlined his dedication to creating a new Nigeria that would accommodate and work for everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or other preferences.

He promised Nigerians that choosing him as president will contribute to the country's unity and put an end to its hardships and poverty,and uncertainty.

In addition, he claimed that by shifting the nation from consumption to production, his ascension would pave the path for economic liberation.

"My government will closely collaborate with state governments to create exceptional synergy, with the goal of an inclusive governance for the general welfare of all citizens," he declared.

"Nigeria is fortunate; we have everything needed to build a great nation.

"What we need is the correct leadership to maximize our nation's potential, including the oil and gas in Imo, for the good of everybody.

"I will uphold the rule of law, secure and unify Nigeria, and transition the nation from one of consumption to one of production.

The LP presidential candidate urged voters to "vote for the Labour Party, vote for human beings: papa, mama, and pikin."

He added that as a manner of implementing affirmative action in accordance with international best practices, his government would support legislation that would ensure a particular number of women and young people in governance.

He claimed that in order to accomplish this, he would reinforce the not-too-young-to-run law and other pertinent existing laws.

NECO calls on defaulting states to settle their N3 billion debt

 

The N3 billion debt owed by states to the National Examinations Council (NECO) for the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination has been urged to be paid (SSCE).

This information was provided by the council's registrar, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim-Wushishi, on Thursday in Minna when the results of the external SSCE for 2022 were announced.

Ibrahim-Wushishi reported that 59,124 candidates took the test, with 31,316 male candidates (representing 52.96%) and 27,808 female candidates (representing 47.03%).

He stated that out of the 58,012 candidates who took the English Language exam, 44,162, or 76.13 percent, received a passing grade. Meanwhile, of the 57,700 candidates who took the Mathematics exam, 43,096, or 74.69 percent, received a passing grade.

According to him, 33,914 candidates—or 57.36 percent—received five or more credits overall, including English Language and Mathematics.

The Supreme Court says In  February 8 decision, the court had stated: "This court considers that there is a real urgency for this court to intervene by the approval of this motion. This court has carefully considered this ex-parte application and the arguments in favor of same.

Therefore, this application is hereby approved as requested.

"That is to say, an order of interim injunction prohibiting the Federal Government of Nigeria, acting either directly or indirectly through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and/or the commercial banks, its agents; agencies, corporations, ministries, parastatals, organizations, or through any person or persons (natural or artificial) howsoever, from suspending or determining or ending on the 10th of February 2023 the timeframe within which the now outdated versions of the 200, 500 and 1,000 naira notes shall beNaira denominations may no longer be accepted as legal money while the plaintiffs/applicants' move on notice for an interim injunction is heard and decided.

However, the Supreme Court has set February 22 for the hearing of the lawsuit filed by the states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara contesting the legality of the Federal Government's naira swap scheme.

The court set the date after adding the attorneys general of the states of Katsina, Lagos, the CR, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, and Sokoto to the original complaint brought by Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara as co-plaintiffs.

The Attorneys General of the States of Edo and Bayelsa were also added by the court as co-respondents. The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), who was initially designated as the lone respondent, won the support of both states.

The judge mandated that thelawsuits brought individually by the states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara and the states of Nasarawa, Rivers, and Kano on the same matter should be combined.

Prior to the hearing scheduled for next Wednesday, the court ordered all parties to file their required paperwork.

Before adjourning, Justice Okoro instructed Kanu Agabi (SAN), the AGF's attorney, to counsel his client to guarantee that the public has access to cash.

Ganduje promises to punish negligent banks and business owners, according to Naira

 

Major company owners who refuse to accept the old naira notes as a form of payment in the state have been warned by the Kano State Government that their operational licenses will be revoked without hesitation.

In a statement released by the information and internal affairs commissioner, Malam Muhammad Garba, in Kano on Tuesday, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje issued the warning.

The old naira notes, according to the governor, are still valid forms of payment.

He clarified that the Supreme Court was adamant about its temporary restraining order regarding old naira notes, which would continue to be accepted as legal cash alongside new ones until a gradual and complete phase-out.

Owners of establishments like supermarkets, shopping centers, banks, restaurants, hotels, market vendors, gas station attendants, and car parks, among others, have a practice of refusing to accept old naira notes in payment for goods and services.

The governor claimed that the situation, which was already stressful due to the lack of the new naira note, is getting worse because of the selfish people's refusal to accept it.
